So if you’re contemplating adding cream cheese to your chocolate cake, go for it – you won’t be disappointed!

SUBSTITUTIONS 

  • Buttermilk Substitute: If you don’t have buttermilk, you can easily make a substitute by measuring out 1 cup of whole milk and replacing 1 tablespoon of it with lemon juice or vinegar. Let it sit for a few minutes, and then add it to your chocolate cake batter!
  • Vegan Option: While I haven’t personally tried this cake with vegan substitutes yet, you can experiment by using an egg replacer and substituting the buttermilk with plant-based milk (using the buttermilk substitute tip mentioned above). You can also make your own vegan cream cheese buttercream using a recipe like this one!

  • Additionally, this moist chocolate cake freezes exceptionally well. For convenient thawing, freeze it in individual slices. First, place the slices in the freezer until they’re frozen solid. Then, wrap each slice in plastic wrap and further wrap them in heavy-duty foil. Freeze for up to two months. When you’re ready to indulge, thaw the slices, uncovered, at room temperature. Enjoy!
