Ingredient Notes

Cupcakes

  • Unsalted butter/Stork: Provides fat for richness, tenderness, and moist crumb structure.
  • Caster sugar: Sweetens while trapping air when creamed with butter for a light, fluffy texture.
  • Eggs: Bind ingredients, add moisture, and create lift and structure.
  • Self-raising flour: Gives structure and natural rise from built-in leavening.
  • Vanilla extract: Adds warmth and enhances the overall flavor balance.
  • Cocoa powder: Brings deep chocolate flavor and visual contrast in the marble effect.
  • Whole milk: Loosens batter for smooth mixing and moist texture.

Decoration

  • Unsalted butter: Base of the buttercream, adding richness and creamy texture.
  • Icing sugar: Sweetens and thickens buttercream for a smooth, pipeable frosting.
  • Cocoa powder: Creates chocolate flavor in the frosting.
  • Boiling water: Helps dissolve cocoa for a smoother buttercream (if needed).
  • Sprinkles/Drizzles: Add texture, sweetness, and a decorative finish.

Tips for Making the Best Chocolate & Vanilla Marble Cupcakes

  • Don’t Overmix: Gently swirl the batters together to achieve the marble effect without blending them fully.
  • Use Room Temperature Ingredients: Ensures the batter mixes smoothly for even baking.
  • Bake Evenly: Rotate the cupcake tray halfway through baking for consistent results.
  • Cool Before Frosting: Always let the cupcakes cool completely to prevent frosting from melting.
  • Pipe for Presentation: Use a piping bag for a neat, professional finish with the buttercream.

Serving Suggestions

  • With Chocolate Sprinkles: Add a playful crunch to the frosting.
  • With White Chocolate Drizzle: Contrast the buttercream with a sweet, creamy touch.
  • With Fresh Strawberries: A fruity garnish that pairs beautifully with chocolate and vanilla.
  • As a Dessert Platter: Serve a tray of these cupcakes for a stunning party centerpiece.

Ingredients

For the Cupcakes

  • 175 grams Unsalted Butter/Stork
  • 175 grams Caster Sugar
  • 3 Large Eggs
  • 175 grams Self Raising Flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • 25 grams Cocoa Powder
  • 2-4 tablespoon Whole Milk

Frosting

  • 150 grams Unsalted Butter
  • 300 grams Icing Sugar
  • 50 grams Cocoa Powder
  • 2-3 tablespoons Boiling Water only if needed
  • Sprinkles/Drizzles

Instructions

Let’s bake some cupcakes!

  • Preheat your oven to 180°C (160°C fan) and line a 12-hole muffin tray with large cupcake or muffin cases.
  • In a bowl, cream together the butter and caster sugar with an electric mixer until nice and smooth. Add in the eggs and flour, then beat again on medium speed for about 20–30 seconds until everything is combined.
  • Split the batter into two bowls. Add the vanilla to one half and the cocoa powder to the other, then beat each bowl until smooth. The batter might be a little thick, so loosen it with about 2 tablespoons of whole milk in each bowl.
  • Now for the fun part — creating that gorgeous marble effect! Spoon small amounts of each batter randomly into the cases, filling them about 2/3 full. Pop them in the oven and bake for 18–20 minutes, or until cooked through. Once done, transfer the cupcakes to a wire rack to cool.

Time to make the buttercream!

  • Beat the butter for a couple of minutes until it’s really smooth and light. Gradually add the icing sugar, half at a time, beating well between each addition. Add in the cocoa powder and keep beating until your frosting is fluffy and luscious — about 3–4 minutes.
  • Once ready, pipe your buttercream onto the cupcakes using your favourite tip — I love a large star!
  • Finally, get creative! Decorate with sprinkles, a chocolate drizzle, or however you like. Enjoy your beautiful, delicious cupcakes!

Notes

Extra fun ideas:

Want to make your frosting extra fancy? You can easily create a two-tone buttercream for an even more marbled effect — it looks gorgeous!
Feeling ambitious? You can turn these cupcakes into a layer cake! Just double the ingredients and divide the batter between two deeper 8″ cake tins. Bake until the cakes are springy to the touch and cooked through (check out my other cakes for timing tips). Don’t forget to double the buttercream filling and slather it generously between the layers — yum!
These delicious treats will stay fresh in a container for up to 3 days, though they might disappear way before that…
